Cantor Steven Weiss

Cantor Steven WeissCantor Steven Weiss is the Cantor and Director of Education at Congregation Sha’aray Shalom in Hingham, Massachusetts, where he has served for the past five years.

Cantor Weiss received his Master’s Degree and investiture from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion School of Sacred Music in May, 1996.  Before coming to Congregation Sha’aray Shalom, he served at Temple Kol Emeth in Marietta, Georgia for ten years, both as a student and a professional cantor. During his time there, he helped the congregation grow to nearly 900 families and as director of education oversaw a program for over 700 children. Prior to that Cantor Weiss served as the Student Cantor at Temple B’nai Brith in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Originally from Great Neck, New York, Cantor Weiss holds a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College where he studied Human Resource Management and Opera Performance.  During his tenure at Ithaca, he was an active performer and was featured in a number of operas including The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Gianni Schicchi, and The Marriage of Figaro with the Ithaca Opera Association.  Cantor Weiss was also active in both the Ithaca College choir and chorus.  His professional debut performance was of Avodath HaKodesh by Ernest Bloch, a favorite composition and the subject of Cantor Weiss’ Masters Thesis.
 
In addition to Cantor Weiss’ synagogue work, he serves as a member of the National Young Leadership Cabinet for the United Jewish Communities, The Jewish Community Relations Council of Massachusetts, The Noar and Scholarship Committees for Combined Jewish Philanthropies, as well as the Jewish Services Committee for the Jewish Vocational Services.  He has also served on the executive committee for the URJ Commission on Synagogue Management and as a member of the executive board of the American Conference of Cantors.

Cantor Weiss is one of the cantors featured on a recording of “The Klezmer Service,” a complete Friday night service composed by Professor Jose Bowen of Georgetown University, as well as “Shabbat Anthology III” released by Transcontinental Music.

Cantor Weiss is married to Dr. Stephanie Gertz, an educational consultant who he met on the United Jewish Communities Young Leadership Mission in the summer of 2005.  They are the proud parents of Breanna Julia Weiss, born on December 12, 2008.
